Today, I will be relating a real life experience to you. I volunteer with the Great Commission Movement as an online missionary and what we do is to respond to questions by people who want to know and grow in God over the internet. I received a question from a lady once who painted this scenario:
“A pastor stole his church money and took it home. That night, armed robbers came to the house and in the process, the pastor was shot dead. Her question was: where will the pastor go? Heaven or Hell?”
Here is was my response to her:
The first thing I will want to share with you is the fact that God loves us. The Bible says while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. How mighty and great is this love that God has shown and yet shows us. In 1 John 3:1 the bible says what manner of love the father God has shown us that we should be called sons of God, and that is what we are! God loves us so much that he wants us to live the best life we can live on this earth and when we sin, we are falling short of God’s best for us. That is why He made the provision for forgiveness of sins. You can live a righteous life on this earth. All you need to do is to consistently be a hearer and a doer of His Word. He will empower you to live for Him completely and it is not a struggle. All you need is to trust Him.
The second thing I want to share is that “If any man is in Christ He is a new creature, old things have passed away behold all things have become new”. This means when we get born again we become new kind of beings, sons of God, having the very nature of God. Our Father God is in Heaven that is where His throne is and that is where we are from. Philippians 3:20 says our citizenship is in heaven! We are already citizens of Heaven, we are not trying to make heaven in that sense because we are already citizens of heaven. A lot of us Christians tend to live our lives with the focus of making heaven. With that mindset we will not achieve the fullness of what God wants for us on the earth.
The Bible says in Romans 5 that we who have received abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life in Christ. We are made to establish the Kingdom and kingship of our father in this earth and live above the beggarly elements of this world. We are more than conquerors and we are overcomers. We need to focus our attention on fulfilling God’s call on our life which is to fill this earth with His glory or fullness and all of us have our role to play in achieving this. I have come to realize that once we focus our attention on finding out what God has for us on this earth, and we start going about to fulfill it by the power of the Holy Spirit, sin will never be an issue for us. I am a living testimony. The only people that are not partakers of this kind of life and citizenship are people who have not accepted Christ as their Savior. Once you have accepted Him as your Lord and Savior you are a partaker of these good things. You are a heavenly citizen.
Finally I will like you to know that neither you nor I nor any other person has been given the authority to Judge others in that capacity i.e. to determine who goes to heaven and who goes to hell. That is the responsibility of God the father and he has given that responsibility to Jesus and Jesus alone. The Bible says in 1 Peter 4:5, speaking about Jesus, it says He is ready to Judge the living and the dead. The Bible also says clearly that let him that call the name of the Lord depart from iniquity, which is SIN. Sin is very dangerous; it can cause you to lose your rights and privileges as bona fide children of God. So we need to stay away from sin with everything in us. But since Jesus is the judge I will like to point out two aspects of His Judgment characteristics.
First I will like to share what most Christians seem to know him as first. Hebrews 12:28-29 says “therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear, for our God is a consuming fire!” and He is really a consuming fire, He is an impartial Judge and if you mess with Him it is not a funny experience. People He created will go to Hell, because He is a consuming Fire. But there is another part of His Judgment that I think most people seem to ignore.
The Bible spoke about Jesus when they brought Him a prostitute caught in the act of Adultery. The law which they were living under expressly condemned this woman to death by stoning. The people had found her guilty and were ready to execute the judgment on her but they asked Jesus, who was living under that same law what they should do. Jesus said… I guess you know what He said. But what I want you to see is what he told the sinner, He asked her: “where are your accusers?” then He said neither do I condemn you. Wow!!! Isn’t that amazing? Jesus said to the adulterous woman: neither do I condemn you. That is the consuming fire in action. Glory to God!!! The Bible said in James 2:12-13 “So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty. For judgement is without mercy will be shown to the one who has shown no mercy. But Mercy triumphs over judgement.” My brethren, we will be Judged by the law of Liberty, remember He had earlier said as we behold the perfect law that brings liberty, we are transformed into that same image from glory to glory.
So back to the question where is that man of God going after He lied, Heaven or Hell? I must say this is a “Jamb” question that only the Lord can say for certain because He will understand the entire context of the kind of life the Man of God had lived. But I guess with everything I have said you may well be able to answer the question yourself.
I believe I have been very helpful to you and I hope you see it as I see it. So that is the reply I gave the lady and I believe a lot of us that are listening right now will benefit immensely from this. God loves us, we should live for God, we should live without sin; BUT never forget: Mercy triumphs over judgement!
