Song Title: Lifted
Scripture: Psalm 34:11-14
Today I will be concluding our series on How to Live the Good life with the final principle King David taught in Psalm 34. The principles we have explored in this series will guarantee you live a good life on earth. The third principle is “seek peace and pursue it”.
3 keys on How to live ‘The Good Life’ | Psalm 34:11-14
On the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said that one of the most important attribute of a child of God is Peacemaking. He said “Blessed are the peace makers because they are the sons of God”. This was basically the same thing King David was saying. If you always seek for peace and pursue it in any situation, you will experience the power of being God’s Child and trust me living like the child of God is the best life you can live on earth. That is how Jesus lived when He was on earth.
It is one thing to say that you are a child of God and it is another thing to live like a child of God.
Imagine being the son of the most powerful president in the world. It will give you great privileges in life. Doors open for you and people just want to do you good. Being a child of God gives you greater privileges in life. Living as the child of God is the good life indeed but the blessings are activated by seeking peace and pursuing it.
PEACE creates an atmosphere for God’s Blessing
The environment of peace is the environment where God has the greatest freedom to bless His people. Where there is no peace it hinders you from experiencing what God wants to do for you.
The environment of peace is the breeding ground for the blessings of God just as strife which is the absence of peace is the breeding ground for all kinds of evil.
James 3:16 says that where there is envy and strife there is confusion and every manner evil works. But where there is peace you have clarity and good things of life.
You need to seek peace and pursue peace when you find it in order to experience this good life. This simply means that whenever you find yourself in a conflict situation, you will diligently seek the most peaceful path to take and take that path even if it puts you in what seems to be a disadvantaged position. For instance imagine your father left you and your younger brother an inheritance but your brother is trying to scheme you out from your share. In that situation your goal should be to do whatever it takes to ensure that there is peace even if it means you giving up your share and looking like a fool to people around. As long as the end results of that decision is peace in the family it is the best thing to do.
This is what it means to pursue peace. Romans 12:18 says that as much as it depends on you, you should live in peace with all men. Even if it is only you that wants peace and the other parties are out for war do not retaliate by abandoning your goal for peace. Rather, let go, even if you have the power to fight. This simple action attracts the blessing of God like nothing else.
Remember when Abraham and Lot had a little conflict and Abraham went the way of peace. I like what he said to Lot in that conversation. He said to Lot His nephew “please let there be no strife between you and me … for we are brethren”. Abraham let Lot choose what he wanted, which technically left him in what seemed like a disadvantageous position. But because He pursued the way of peace God ensured that He gained the best from that decision. God appeared to Him after Lot left and assured Abraham that He will possess the Land of promise which included where Lot choose. That is the power of pursuing the way of peace. In the same way if you go the way of peace in any decision, you open the door for a visitation from your father, God.
The way of peace is not the easiest road to travel. It takes a lot to forsake your right especially when you have what it takes to fight for it. But there are a few mindsets you can develop that will help you walk in peace with ease.
Are you struggling to make Peace? Use this 3-Point Checklist
First, depend only on God as your only source and judge. This means that all your expectations for living a good life here on earth are placed on God and God alone. This is actually the best mindset to have because it will keep you free from offense when people hurt you and also keep you free from the manipulations of men. Because God is good, you can always expect and experience good things from God even if men forsake you. James 1:17 says that every good and perfect gift is from God. So if you depend on God you will experience good and perfect things in your life. This mindset will make it easier for you to avoid strife because you know that god does not operate in strife.
Secondly you need to give up selfishness. That is, you need to develop the attitude of seeking for the well being of other and not just your well being alone. Apostle Paul says in Philippians 2:3 that nothing should be done out of selfish ambition. In verse 4 he went on to say that you should not only look out for your own interest but also the interest of others. Developing this mindset makes you a winner because it was the same mind that Jesus had. I always thought of other people before himself.
And finally you need to know firm in your mind that whenever you pursue peace in any situation you will never, I repeat NEVER lose out. Because God will always make it work out for your good. He is committed to it. It may look like a bad decision logically but as far as peace is the motivating factor behind that decision God will always ensure that you gain the advantage sooner or later.
Remember the environment of peace is the environment that God’s blessing can flourish in a mans life. So strive to make peace the dominant force in you environment and you will indeed be the person that God blesses.
