Artist: Kirk Franklin
Song Title: Today
Scripture: Mark 11:25-26
First let me start by wishing you a very HAPPY CHRISTMAS!
Today is Christmas, the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus who changed the course of this world for good. When the angel appeared to the shepherds at night to announce the birth of Jesus, he said that he brings to them good news of GREAT JOY that will spread to all people, including you. In the same situation the host of heaven, sang praises to God saying glory to God in the highest and peace to men on earth, all because of the birth of Jesus. So I pray for you today that the great joy and peace that Jesus brings become tangibly evident in your life today and always in Jesus name.
The Power of Forgiveness!
I have learnt over time that one secrets Jesus taught about experiencing and enjoying the Joy and Peace that he brings is forgiveness.
Forgiveness is like the gate way to enjoying the full blessing of God while you are still in this earth. Over the last two weeks of BotROCK i.e. Building on the ROCK, we have been discussing forgiveness. Last week we discussed how to forgive yourself and move on with enjoying your life. The week before that, we discussed the Abundant Grace of God in His forgiveness toward you. You can visit our Facebook page too to get these life transforming episodes of BotROCK.
Today being Christmas we will be discussing the third aspect of forgiveness, which I believe will unleash the blessings of God upon your life if your practice it. We will be discussing, learning to forgive others.
No kidding; Forgiving others can seem to be very Difficult
I remember when Peter asked Jesus how many times he has to forgive his brother in a day and Jesus replied 70 times 7. Peter and the other disciples where in awe, they said What! 490 times a day! Wow! “Lord please increase our faith (Italics added by me). They said this because they thought that forgiving people that hurt you is a very difficult thing!
But Jesus’ response showed that they already had enough faith in them to do it, but they did not recognize it. In the same way you have enough faith on this beautiful Christmas day to forgive and forget everyone that has hurt you, be it your ex-husband, your mother in-law, your brother, sister, boss or any other person, that has hurt you.
I hear some say, “How can I forgive Him, you have no idea what he did to me”. Yes, you are very correct, I have no idea what He did to you, but it is only because he did whatever to you that there is an occasion for you to forgive. If he didn’t do anything to you there will be no need to forgive him. Plus, you not forgiving him actually puts you, and not him in a disadvantaged position.
Unforgiveness is a major hindrance that stops you from experiencing the blessing of God in your life!
How to Deal with Unforgiveness
Unforgiveness is a major hindrance that stops people from experiencing the blessing of God in their lives. A Christian that has unforgiveness in his or her heart will perpetually struggle in life.
For instance, if you know the principles of financial prosperity or healing in the kingdom and you have practiced it some time ago and seen it work. But now, it does not seem to be working for you. Check your heart and get rid of any unforgiveness, because it might just be the hindrance that is limiting God’s hand to work in your life.
Mark 11:25-26 says that for your prayers to be answered by God, you need to forgive anyone that you have something against and effective prayer is a key to experiencing God’s blessing in your life. That is how important it is for you to get rid of any unforgiveness and bitterness in your heart against anyone.
Ephesians 4:31-32 Says “Let all bitterness (Unforgiveness) be put away from you and with malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God forgave you.” The reason unforgiveness hinders God’s blessing in your life is simply because, God expects you to forgive others, the same way he forgave you.
Because God has given you His very nature as His child, you have the ability to forgive like God.
God forgives you unconditionally and He expects you to forgive others unconditionally also. Because He has given you His very nature as His child, you have the ability to forgive like God.
However because of our human nature, forgiveness tends to be difficult. The people that hurt us are usually people we loved and trusted, so them hurting us reaches the depth of our emotions, and emotional hurts can be difficult to heal. But instead of carrying the hurt and harboring unforgiveness, which is double wahala, you need to learn how to forgive and move on.
Let me share with you a few steps which I have practiced in my life that has helped me deal with unforgiveness when people I love and respect hurt me deeply with their words and actions.
- First, I report them to God and ask Him for Grace to forgive them. This simply means that I first of all go to God, and express how I feel to Him and Him alone. God is the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, and He knows how best to comfort me, when I approach Him. I believe you should be very sincere with God, but always be willing to do what He says in His Word. Even though you don’t feel like forgiving, ask God for grace to take the right steps to forgive.
- Secondly, I pray for the good of the person that hurt me. Jesus said we should pray for people that despitefully use us. This is a very difficult act especially when you are feeling the hurt. When you do it at first, it will feel like it is not coming from your heart, but don’t stop. The more you pray for the good of the person that hurt you, the more you will experience the healing. It will get to the point that you will sincerely in heart want good for that person. At the start this will be very difficult, but trust that God has granted you grace and get yourself to start and keep at it. Once you start, it becomes easy.
- Finally, if any opportunity is presented for you to do good to the person, don’t hesitate to do it, if you have the means. Sometimes, I don’t actually wait for the opportunity to do good, I actually think up something to do for the person, maybe buy them something. Doing this may not seem logical in your mind, so you will have to go through a barrier in your mind to do it, because you want to please God. But once you do it, you will feel maximum satisfaction and healing. For me, doing this completely removes any feeling of animosity for the person and keeps my heart clear of unforgiveness.
If you have unforgiveness in your heart it keeps you in bondage and lack of peace. No matter how long you have harbored unforgiveness in your heart, you can receive your healing today. This Christmas day is a great opportunity to begin. Take these 3 steps with expectation and you will experience God’s healing power and blessings from today.
BEFORE WE END OUR PROGRAM TODAY, I want to give you an opportunity to make Jesus Lord of your life. He wants to make Himself real to you if you will let Him. Say this simple prayer with me:
Jesus I know you are the son of God and you died for my sins. Today I give you my life, take me and change me. Be the Lord of my life. Thank you Lord, for I am now yours!
