Artist: Matt Redman
Song Title: We Could Change the World
Scripture: John 14:12
In exactly 10 days from today we will be celebrating Easter, which is the day Christians commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a great celebration! I believe you may be planning to travel to see love ones and hang out with friends. It is great to celebrate, God loves it. But let me ask you a question and I want you to think about it: Do you really understand what it means that Jesus resurrected from the dead?
As a Nigerian especially from our Igbo land in the East, you can say that Christianity is now part of our culture. In this region the average person goes to Church. I believe it is safe to say that 60% of people in the East attend Church in one form or the other at least once a month. Most people where born into Christian families, and they were brought up within Christian environment. But today I want you to think about this, do you really know what it means that you are a Christian? I have come to realize that you can be involved in something and be so committed to that thing without having any idea what that thing really means.
I remember the movie “The God Father”. There was a scene where the God father was having a conversation with the Cardinal. The Cardinal used a perfect illustration to define the experience of many Christians. He picked a stone that was inside a fountain of water and broke it and showed that the inside was dry even though it had been in the water for a long time. This means that you may have been in Christianity for a long time but Christianity has not entered into you. Trust me, that is the worst state to be in.
What does it mean to be Christian?
So what does Christianity really mean? The word Christian or Christ-ian, like the word Nigerian simply means a person that originates from Christ and behaves like Christ. It was first used in Acts 11, after Paul’s conversation some years after the day of Pentecost. Barnabas brought Him to Antioch and they thought the Church in that place for one (1) whole year. Acts 11:26 says that “the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch”.
And interestingly it was not them that called themselves Christians; it was non-believers in Christ that called them Christians. They were simply Disciples of Christ. In order words they were defined as Christians based on the way they were living. They were living like Christ lived when He was on the earth, so the people called them Christ-ians.
Living just like JESUS!
So a Christian is someone that has been empowered to live like Christ on the earth. Note I said empowered. It simply means when you become a Christian, you receive the right to become a child of the most high God and the ability to live like one. That is, simply living like Jesus Christ on the Earth. I have come to understand, the reason why Jesus lived for 33 years on Earth and especially His last three years was to show Christians how they are meant to live. He left a reference point or guideline for how people that will believe in His resurrection will live their lives on the earth. No wonder He told His disciples when He was on the earth that they will do greater works than He did.
In order words, if you are a Christian your primary goal is to become a person that when people meet you it will be like they literarily met Christ. This should be your primary ambition in life if you say you are a Christian. What you will eat, where you will work and all those other things should be secondary. That is what the people of Antioch saw and experienced, that made them call the disciples Christians. So you can see that being a Christian goes beyond attending Church every Sunday or filling Christianity on a form as your religion.

Whenever I think of this I am amazed and I thank God for the death and resurrection of Jesus because it is through Jesus’ resurrection that we gained access to this awesome life that is available to us. Now imagine if Jesus was working in your office, what will your boss think of Him, or if Jesus was in your class, what will your lecturer think of Him. If Jesus will be exception if He stepped into your shoes, then you should always strive to be exceptional in your shoes because as a Christian, God has given you the ability to live like Jesus on the earth all you need is to develop it and give it expression. This is an amazing advantage that is available to every believer in Jesus Christ and I will say every single person that is living on the earth because it is available to every single person by grace through faith.
Let’s look at some of the Hallmarks of Jesus’ life on earth. As we look at these things, see them as the way you are suppose to live now because God has already given you the ability to live like that.
Jesus lived above sin, so as a Christian you can and should live above sin. Jesus was not restricted by natural circumstances so you should strive not to be restricted by natural circumstances. Jesus was compassionate to all, so you can and should be compassionate. Jesus always met needs in His environment, so you should meet needs in your environment. Jesus read and obeyed the scriptures; you also should be devoted to reading and obeying the scripture.
Obedience to God was Jesus secret of success, so obedience to God will be your secret of success in life.
All Jesus did and the way Jesus lived is available to every single child of God, because God has given the ability to live like Jesus to every single child He has. The gateway to start manifesting these things in your life is total devotion to God and His Word. Don’t let the life of Christ in you lie dormant, determine to give it expression and you will be outstanding where ever you are Just as Jesus was outstanding when He was on earth. You have received it by Grace through faith because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
BEFORE WE END OUR PROGRAM TODAY, I want to give you an opportunity to make Jesus Lord of your life. He wants to make Himself real to you if you will let Him. Say this simple prayer with me:
