I warmly welcome you to this edition of the program, Building on the ROCK with Pastor Murphy. This program is designed to empower you achieve your dreams in God through His Word. It is an honour to share the all powerful Word of God with you today. My name is Murphy Okpala. Today I will be continuing my discussion on the series: Why it is more Profitable to be a Christian but before we go on with the discussion let’s listen to this lovely song.
Artist: Chris Tomlin
Song Title: Lay Me Down
Scripture: Galatians 5:22-23
If you were born in the 80’s or earlier you will remember the epic action movie First Blood. If that doesn’t ring a bell to you let me give another clue, Rambo. Now you know what I’m talking about. Growing up, Rambo was my favorite action Hero, the ultimate 1 man army. Single handedly, Rambo destabilized an entire city’s armed forces and conquered. Amazing warrior, don’t you think?
Struggle Less and Accomplish more through your Virtues
But do you know that a patient man that has self control is better than a man that can take a city like Rambo? Proverbs 16:32 says “Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city”. In other words, someone that is patient and exercises self-control in his actions will make better advancement and accomplish more in life than someone that is strong enough to take a whole city.
Now here is the good news! As a Christian you automatically inherited the character of patience and self-control the day you accepted Jesus as your Lord. I know you may find that difficult to believe because in your daily experience you barely exercise any of these characters but it is the plain truth of God’s word.
Patience and self-control is your nature as a child of God and they will give you massive advantage in your life, work and business as you develop it. Today on BotROCK we will be discussing these two powerful characters that God has equipped us with to achieve outstanding results in our lives.
Before I continue allow me to take a quick detour and bring you some exciting news. The All Believers Prayer Convention, #aBPC 5.0 is here again! This edition is uniquely designed to provide a platform for you to birth your destiny in an atmosphere of prayer and lunch you into the heaven on earth experience. The theme of this edition is “The Emergence” and it will hold from the 30th October to the 1st November. Save the date and start planning to attend. I will keep you posted.
Call it whatever you like: Discipline, Self-Control… it is your Winning Trick!
Let me start our discussion today with a simple definition of self-control. It is simply the ability to keep, your desires, emotions and action in check. It is the ability to deny yourself some things in order to achieve something greater. Self-control is what distinguishes a talented person from someone that has achieved something remarkable with his talent. It is safe for me to say that without self-control you cannot accomplish anything meaningful.
In life there are always alternatives. To do one thing you have to forgo something else. That’s exactly is the logic behind the economic term opportunity cost. And the most beneficial things are usually not the most popular things you would want to do. Self-control gives you that ability to discipline yourself to do what you rather not do because you want to achieve something greater.
I remember when Serena Williams won the gold medal in the last Olympics and danced to celebrate her victory. That dance step was the dance for a particular gang called the crips which dominated black neighborhoods in America where she grew up. Now imagine if Serena Williams as a teenager was dancing crip walk with the gangs, do you think she would have had a shot at the Olympic gold medal. Even though she might have wanted join the gang, self-control made her forgo it for the strict training she had to endure to become a world champion tennis player.
In 1 Corinthians 9:25 Apostle Paul said everyone who competes in the game exercises strict self-control in training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we as Christian we do it for a crown that will last forever.
One thing that most people desire is a crown in life. It might be a good job, a promotion, a better marriage, a good grade in school or growing a business. A crown is anything that people will admire and praise you for. I believe almost everybody wants that. But for you to achieve any crown you will have to exercise strict self-control to do the things that you need to do in other to achieve them.
That is the area most people have a challenge. It seems to be difficult but the good news is that as a Christian you already innately have the nature and capacity to exercise the strictest level of self-control, because self-control is one of the fruit of the Spirit which we have been discussing in this series. This means that if you actively develop it, you will be a person that will wear many crowns even in this life.
And as a Christian you won’t only be well crowned in this life, you will also receive the eternal crown Jesus will give to everyone that persevere to observed strict-self control to do what He says.
Tap into your innate Entrepreneurial Skills:
Your Ability to Stay Focused. Remain Consistent. Being Patient and Persevere
This leads me to another powerful character that God has endowed us with as Christian, perseverance or patience.
Once I was listening to a lecture on entrepreneurship and the facilitator was listing the attributes of a good entrepreneur. One of the things he said is that a good entrepreneur has the ability to stay focused and consistent.
In simple terms that is what it means to be patient. In other words, when you know something is the right thing to do, you are willing to stay with it despite time and unfavourable circumstances and be consistent until you see the result. A patient person is someone who will not easily give-up on doing what is right come what may.
That is the mindset of a Champion and that should also be our mindsets as children of a patient God.
Do you see the similarity between patience and self control? Almost every prominent person that has achieved something great possesses or has developed these two characters. God has endowed you freely with them, all you need is to develop them and you will become a very valuable person.
Your 7 Step Guide to Develop Patience and Self-Control
How do I develop these Characters, you may ask?
Here are seven practical tips that will help you develop self Control and patience as a Christian:
- Accept the fact that God has already endowed you with these characters. You can look in the mirror and tell yourself daily that you possess the Character of patience and self-control
- Develop your relationship with God through spending time in prayer, studying His Word, and practicing what you have learned
- Identify the things you desire to achieve in your life and think on the benefits they will give you. Remember it is God’s crown that is the most valuable.
- Identify the most important things you need to be doing
- Establish boundaries that will help you do them and keep you from doing the things you are not suppose to do. It is advisable to have someone that you will be responsible to. It may be a friend, parent or spouse. Someone that cares for you and will help you make positive decisions.
- Even if things are not working as you expect don’t give-up but keep doing the right things consistently
- Ask Jesus to help you –He is the perfect model for patience and self-control.
As Christians we have all it takes for us to succeed in this life and get a reward from God when we finally see him face to face. Put in some effort in developing the things that God has freely given you as His child and before long you will start enjoying the benefits.
It is very profitable to be a Christian.
