Song Title: Where Would We Be
Scripture: 1 John 4:16
Some days ago a prank caller called me claiming that he was someone I knew. Have you ever received such calls?
Immediately he started talking I knew his aim was to try and defraud me but I decided to play along. He said he worked for a company and asked if I could handle a supply contract for them. He then said I should get a paper and biro and call him back to get the information, but I told him that he could go on and give the information. At that time he realized I was on to him, he made a nasty statement and cut the call. After the call a thought came to me, God loves this guy and if only he knew it and can trust in God’s love for him, he will realize that he does not have to result to crime to get his needs met because God’s love does not only redeem us, it also protects, and provides for us abundantly.
So today on BotROCK with Pastor Murphy I want us to explore God’s boundless love for us and how to appropriate it in our lives.
What it means for God to love you!
The phrase “God loves you” is a very popular Christian “cliché”.
Almost everybody I have met in my life have heard it said to them in one way or the other. When you hear it, you can easily take it for granted. But the import of that statement dawning in your consciousness will set you free completely from fear, worry and every limitation in your mind. The power of Christianity is founded on that simple phrase. John 3:16 says for God so loved the World that He gave His only son to save everyone that believes.
God so loved us and gave His best to ensure that we are saved and not only saved but to have life more abundantly. God’s love is simply amazing. His love is not a love of pity; it is a love of empowerment. Because of His love for you, He always works for your good to ensure that your experience the fullness of what He has already prepared for you even without you asking Him for anything. That’s just amazing!
God is love and He loves you.
In other words, God who is the definition of love chose you to be the object of His love. This means that every action that He demonstrates towards you will be an expression of love because love is just who He is. Once in a while I jokingly say God is not a mafia boss because even though a mafia boss has the capacity to love his family, he is still a wicked man. But God is love by nature and His love is different from the love that a man can have for you unless the man has been empowered by the nature of God.
God who is the definition of love chose you to be the object of His love
Romans 5:8 Say that God demonstrated His own kind of love to us in that while we were still sinners He sent His most precious son to die for us. This is what distinguishes the love of God and the love of man. The Love of God can sacrifice His all to ensure that the person He loves experiences a better life. And this is not dependent on you but on God is love and He can never change. Pause and think about that.
Your experience in a relationship with someone will be reflection of the person’s personality, knowledge and ability.
For instance, a guy can sincerely love a lady but because he grew up in an “all boys family”, he finds it difficult to express his emotions in a way that the lady connects with. He is limited in expressing love so the lady will have to bear with the guy’s weaknesses because she knows the guy genuinely loves her. That will be her experience. But with God you can never have any form of dissatisfaction when you know how to appropriate His love for you because God is love by nature.
You can Rely on God’s Love for You
Sometimes when we consider what the Bible says about God and compare it to what is happening in our lives tend to doubt if God really loves us or is God loves you one of those good things that Christians use to pacify people they are preaching to.
For instance, the scripture say that God owns the cattle on the thousand hills and the silver and gold belongs to God. If this same God loves me why am I still living in lack?
However, the challenge is that we have not learnt how to appropriate the love of God and get it to work for us.
The scripture we read earlier 1 John 4:16 says and so we know and rely on the love that God has for us. In order words for us to experience the love of God tangibly in our lives you do not only need to know the love God has for you, you also have to rely on it. This is where we usually miss it.
As Christians even though we know God loves us, we tend to doubt it especially when we are confronted with a difficult situation. Or you meet a guy that other sinners consider a sinner, you start doubting if God loves covers this situation too. And when you doubt God’s love, you will not be able to rely or risk your life on it. It is only when you rely on God’s love for you that you will see the reality of it.
Relying on God’s love for you is simply trusting that He loves you. And you only trust when you do not have all the facts in place. For instance if your mum visits you and after she left some money gets missing from your house, your trust in your mum will not even allow you ask her if she took it even though the circumstances point to the fact that she must have taken it. If she tells you she didn’t, you will immediately believe her and start looking for other options. This is because you rely on the fact that your mother loves you and she will not steal from you. Rather she will give to you.
In the same way relying on God’s love for you will cause you to believe what He says and cast yourself totally on His word because you know that He loves you and will not let you fall down. Relying on God’s love for you causes you to obey His instructions not because they are rules but because they are instructions from some that loves you and that knows better than you. It’s just like a mother telling her child that she loves not to put his hand in fire.
God is love and He loves you greatly. It is an unchangeable fact of life.
As you rely on that love by trusting in His word and casting all your cares on God, you’ll see His love empowering you to be the best you can be in life!
