WOW! It is 5 days to Christmas and I’m so excited, I hope you are too. Since the next edition of Building on the Rock or BotROCK as we fondly call it, is after Christmas day I want to wish all you wonderful listeners a very blissful Christmas and a joy filled holiday!
For about 5 weeks now, we have been discussing faith or trusting God. We have looked at how our trust in God relates to various Bible concepts such as hope, patience, circumstances and probabilities. The aim of these discussions is to help us have a holistic view of faith. As you apply the things you have learnt in this series you will receive great things from our good God.
Today we will be discussing faith in relation to Love; and how appropriate it is to discuss this topic in this season of love and sharing. I have come to understand that love is the most powerful force on the earth. You might have heard that with faith all things are possible, and it is very true, but that faith has to be fueled by love to work.
So without love, faith is very limited in its ability. Today I will share two elements of faith and love as it relates with us in relating with God and in getting our needs met by God. They are love as the foundation of faith and love as the corresponding action of faith.
Sometime ago as I was meditating on the scriptures, I had a strong impression in my heart about the love of God. It hit me in my mind that the Bible never said that God is power or that God is miracle. What it says is that all power belongs to God and He does great miracles but it never says that He is any of those things. However, the Bible says that God is Love. This simply means that whenever you meet God you will experience love. Meaning that, you might not always see spectacular power or miracles but you MUST see love. The Bible also said God is faithful. His faithfulness is an aspect of His love. Now imagine this, God who is Love and Faithful, loves you! Is that not amazing?
Whenever you meet God, you will experience Love.
I love my wife so much. I remember when my wife and I where dating back in school, each moment was special, I never wanted to let her out of my sight. Friends usually teased me because I would often stand by her window and talk with her till it was late, but I didn’t care because I was so in love. I always wanted to see her, I made sacrifices to please her but they didn’t feel like sacrifices, because they were fun to me. As a student, I wished I could give her the world but I was so limited. If you are in love with someone you understand what I mean.
Now imagine this, God who is love by nature and has limitless power, loves you deeply! If I, though human, can love my wife so much that I can do anything to make her happy, how much more do you think God who is love by nature, and loves you greatly will do for you? If you know that God is love and He loves you greatly, your faith in Him will always produce result. Because God loves you, He will give you everything that will make you happy. As a matter of fact He has already given you everything that will make you happy in this life. The Bible said that He will not withhold any good thing from His Children.
A woman that has a very rich husband and knows that her husband loves her, will not be worried if the car she ask her husband to buy her last week has not yet come. She will be certain that the car will come. As a matter of fact, the husband agreeing to buy her the car equals her owning the car. God has agreed to give you everything you need for life and godliness and because He loves you greatly, He will not withhold any of it from you. If you have this mindset, you will never be worried that what God promised you will not come to pass, no matter what it is. He has the ability, He has the resources and He desires to fulfill all that He has promised you. The knowledge of this will cause your faith to work tremendously. Every morning remind yourself that God loves you. Look in the mirror and tell yourself God is love and He loves me greatly. No good thing will He withhold from me! And praise Him for that.
Our theme scripture today, Psalm 37:3 captures the second aspect of love as it relates to faith. It says trust in the Lord and do good. This simply means that your trust and confident expectation in the fact that God will meet your need can be seen or reflected in how you treat people around you! Simply put walking in love from your heart towards people around you can accelerate your possession of what you expect from God.
When you have faith for something, it means you already have that thing even though it may not yet be in your physical possession. This understanding completely sets you free from worry and gets your eyes beyond yourself and your needs. If your eyes are not on your needs, it frees you to notice and meet the needs of people around you. For instance, if you are asking God for a child and God gave you a promise, you should rest in that promise by praising God continually like you already have a Child. Your attitude should change from that of a barren woman to that of a fruitful mother. That is how faith works. A woman with children will not be envious of other people children. She will not be reluctant to help take care of her neighbor’s child if she can. When you act like this from your heart because you believe God’s promise to you and you continually act like this no matter how long it takes, God will come through for you and give you several children.
When you go out of your way to do good to someone (not because you are expecting a direct reward), it shows God that you believe that He has met your needs and that you are looking beyond your own situation. This attitude of showing love to people when you are trusting God for something actually facilitates God’s promise to come to pass. This is a very powerful principle that many people don’t realize.
If your need makes you act badly to your neighbor or causes you to envy your neighbor, it simply shows that you don’t trust God to do you good. People that trust God indeed naturally rejoices when another person gets a blessing, because they know that if God did it for their neighbor, He can & will do it for them. Doing evil to people around you, in your office, class or your neighbors at home shows that your trust is not in God.
Dear friends, know that God loves you and He is eager to do you good. He will not withhold any good thing from you if you trust in Him. And when you are waiting patiently for your need to be met by God, make it a habit to do good to people around you and God will do exceeding abundantly above your expectations.
